[edit] Languages

There are 26 languages in Everquest that are taught through training at a Guild Master and/or other players. The maximum skill cap for languages are 100. Certain races also have maximum skill points in select language(s) at the start of character creation. There are two "an unknown tongues" that are from special rules servers and certain languages are not available on those special rules servers. More to be covered later in this stub on those two languages.

You skill up the language by selecting the Language to be used in the tab and talking to other players. Two players can skill up from 1 skill point only after one has learned the language from the Guild Master. Then the two will talk in group channel and the conversation will slowly tick up as one gains a skill point then the other person.

The most efficient way to learn languages is to have a or more person(s) with 100 skill spam in the group.

[edit] Base "Special" Racial Language Skills

  • Dark Elf: Elvish (54), Elder Elvish (54), Dark Speech (100)
  • Drakkin: Dragon (100), Elder Dragon (100)
  • Dwarves: Gnomish (25)
  • Frogloks: Troll (42)
  • Gnomes: Dwarvish (54)
  • Half-Elves: Elvish (100)
  • High Elves: Dark Elvish (51), Elder Elvish (51)
  • Iksar: Lizardman (100), Dark Speech (100), Common Tongue (80)
  • Ogres: Dark Speech (100)
  • Trolls: Dark Speech (100)
  • Vah Shir: Erudian (32), Combine (100)

Note: Not all races know all languages starting or have maximum skill in certain languages. Iksars are the only race in the entire game that does not start the game with 100 skill in Common Tongue, however this defect is neglible as skilling up is easy.

[edit] Firiona Vie Server

Firiona Vie has a special rules set that there is no Common Tongue on the entire server. Most players speak Elvish as the lingua franca. New arrivals to the server are well advised to ooc for a person to assist with acquiring the lingua franca(s) for the server in the Plane of Knowledge, Guild Lobby, or Bazaar. Be polite and don't whine if no one responds to your request. The other option is to just LFG and acquire the lingua franca there as you level.

Questionable:

  • an unknown language

Special note: It is currently unknown if any player currently active on Firiona Vie posses either or both of the special coded languages from other servers known as an unknown language(s). It is hypothetically possible, but is currently unconfirmed or unknown if one or both even exists on Firiona Vie. These unknown languages here would be Common Tongue and the PvP player language skill, but would show up as an unknown language to Firiona Vie polyglots.

[edit] Player Versus Player Language

One of the player versus player servers had a team language called "Human" for the "Human Team" that consisted of Erudites, Humans, and Vah Shir. This language originated on the Tallon Zek and Vallon Zek servers. This language is now defunct as of the pvp Rallos Server merger and only known as "an unknown language" on all servers. It is considered either the 26th or 27th numbered language.

[edit] An Unknown Language

As explained before, special rules servers have special coded languages. Today, only the Human language from Firiona Vie remains in tact. The other pvp server language is now defunct and seen on Rallos Zek as an Unknown Language. Firona Vie and pvp servers were originally not allowed to transfer to other servers and today Firiona Vie players still cannot travel off of the server. However, pvp players are free to transfer. The only way to transfer off of the server was to transfer to the Stormhammer server which was a special server that hosted many Gm events with special services. Here Firiona Vie players and pvp players were free to communicate with other players from other servers and spread their specially coded languages.

Today, the only way to learn these two languages are to talk to someone that transferred from this server or these servers. The more populous servers do have the highest populations with these two languages. They can only be learned through other players and be understood by other players with the skill in the an unknown languages.

You can speak through your guild channel to other players with the skill and not be understood by other players without the language. This is the only practical application for the language, however it will be spread through group talk. You can "seed" the language base skill in others by merely talking in the language for a short period. It makes for an interesting parlor trick, nothing more.

Side note: Guilds with a lot of player transfer traffic will have these languages and thus they will trickle out to the greater player population. Ask around if you're looking for someone to teach you this language, but be polite. Generally the lower the population of the server the more unlikely it is to find these languages.

[edit] Language Purposes

In the past languages were used to communicate with other players as a roleplaying endeavor. On team pvp players these languages were used to coordinate attacks on the other teams through ooc channels. Quests used languages to talk to specific NPC's to find out clues or to read specific parchments. Tradeskill receipes also used these different languages to decypher receipes.

The last time quests or any tradeskills required languages was during the Shadows of Luclin period. Once the server channel system was implemented the pvp languages lost a lot of their original intent. Only the lingua francas of Firiona Vie remain as small social barriers for newbies on the server, however many older residents are willing to teach the basic lingua francas.

Today the only use for having languages are for Charm slot items that require specific skills. The an unknown languages skills used to boost the maximum of these charms beyond their intended stats, however after the information about this got to the development staff it was nerfed. You now are required to know only the official 26 official languages for your specific server for linguist based charms.
